Cape Town is a hiker’s paradise. With mountains meeting the ocean, trails that wind through fynbos, forests, and rocky peaks, and views that take your breath away, there’s always a new path to explore.
I’ve lived here for years, and no matter how many times I hike these trails, they never lose their magic. Here are some of my favourite hiking trails near Cape Town — each one offering something unique, from peaceful coastal walks to challenging climbs with panoramic views.
1. Lion’s Head – A Sunrise Classic
If you want to see Cape Town at its best, start early and catch the sunrise from Lion’s Head. The trail spirals around the mountain, giving you views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill, and the Atlantic Ocean.
- Distance: 5.5 km round trip
- Time: 1.5–2 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Highlights: Sunrise views, city and ocean panoramas, and a quick workout with a big reward
💡 Tip: Bring a headlamp if you’re starting before dawn, and a flask of coffee to enjoy at the top.
2. Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge – The Iconic Climb
Platteklip Gorge is the most direct route up Table Mountain — and one of the most popular. It’s a steady, steep climb up a rocky gorge, and the view from the top is worth every step.
- Distance: 6 km round trip
- Time: 2–3 hours up, 1–1.5 hours down (or take the cable car)
- Difficulty: Challenging
- Highlights: Sweeping city views, cool breeze at the summit, and the satisfaction of summiting Cape Town’s most famous peak
💡 Tip: Start early to avoid the midday heat, and take plenty of water — there’s little shade.
3. Cecilia Forest – Tranquil and Refreshing
Tucked away in the southern suburbs, Cecilia Forest is perfect when you need a peaceful escape. The path winds through shady trees, streams, and waterfalls, with options to connect to Kirstenbosch or Constantia Nek.
- Distance: 4–8 km (depending on the route)
- Time: 1–2 hours
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Highlights: Forest canopy, birdlife, and gentle gradients
💡 Tip: Ideal for morning walks — you’ll often share the trail with runners and dogs.
4. Kasteelspoort – Views Over the Twelve Apostles
Starting from Camps Bay, this trail leads you up the Twelve Apostles side of Table Mountain. The route is steep but scenic, passing through beautiful rock formations and ending with a jaw-dropping view from the famous “Diving Board” rock.
- Distance: 6 km one way
- Time: 3–4 hours up
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
- Highlights: Coastal views, dramatic cliffs, and a perfect photo spot at the top
💡 Tip: Go early to catch the soft morning light and avoid the heat — and pack a picnic for the top.
5. Silvermine Nature Reserve – Peaceful Panoramas
Silvermine offers some of the most family-friendly hikes in Cape Town. The trails loop around a large reservoir, with views over False Bay and the Atlantic.
- Distance: 3–8 km (various routes)
- Time: 1–3 hours
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Highlights: Fynbos, panoramic viewpoints, and a refreshing swim at the reservoir
💡 Tip: Bring your Wild Card or pay a small conservation fee at the gate.
6. Devil’s Peak – Table Mountain’s Wilder Sibling
Less crowded than Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak offers a rugged, rewarding hike with equally impressive views. You’ll see the city bowl, the Cape Flats, and even the Hottentots-Holland mountains in the distance.
- Distance: 7 km round trip
- Time: 3–4 hours
- Difficulty: Challenging
- Highlights: 360° views, solitude, and a strong sense of accomplishment
💡 Tip: Watch the weather — it can change quickly, and mist often rolls in from the mountain.
